ADHD Care in General Practice
NSW ADHD prescribing reforms are expanding the role of general practice in providing timely, ongoing care for people aged six years and older with ADHD. GPs can apply to become Continuation Prescribers or complete additional training to become Endorsed Prescribers, enabling them to support stable patients or initiate psychostimulant treatment for a new diagnosis.
Become a Continuation Prescriber
Reforms introduced in late 2025 allow GPs who have applied for and been granted Continuation Prescriber status to prescribe psychostimulant medications for patients aged 6 years and older with a previously diagnosed ADHD diagnosis. GP Continuation Prescribers can prescribe psychostimulant medications for patients with ADHD who have been previously diagnosed and are clinically stable. GP Endorsed Prescribers are able to initiate psychostimulant treatment for patients with a new ADHD diagnosis.
Become an Endorsed Prescriber
To become an Endorsed Prescriber, GPs are required to complete training through either:
Pre-scheduled, live facilitated training sessions; or
Self-paced online learning modules.
An additional mandatory component of the program is participation in a facilitated Community of Practice (CoP). These sessions are delivered via videoconference and are offered at a range of times and days to support participation. The next Endorsed Prescriber Training Program is scheduled to commence in November 2026.
