New National Cervical Screening Program Guidelines

The National Cervical Screening Program Guidelines ‘for the management of screen-detected abnormalities, screening in specific populations and investigation of abnormal vaginal bleeding’ have been updated to incorporate and support best clinical practice.

The new Guidelines are now live and are available at: Cervical Cancer Screening Guidelines | Cancer Council

The Cervical Screening Quick Reference Guide includes all the changes cancer.org.au/assets/pdf/cervical-screening-quick-reference-guide

The changes will not go live in the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) until April.

Discretion and best clinical judgement are to be used regarding the use and ‘compliance’ with the Guidelines during this time.

The new program Guidelines are supported with the following healthcare provider training:

  • RACGP’s educational webinars – 2025 cervical screening update: what you need to know about the latest guidelines

  • Updated healthcare provider education and training modules will be available on the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC) website from 13 Jan 2025, and can be accessed on their website here. This will have 5 interactive eLearning modules in line with the updated guidelines, it will be free as well as CPD accredited with RACGP & ACRRM.

Please direct any questions or concerns via email to NCSPcommittees@health.gov.au or your Primary Care Engagement Officer.
