Availability of RHD NIPT for RhD-negative pregnant women
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is pleased to offer an accredited Non-invasive prenatal test for fetal RHD (RHD NIPT) at our Brisbane Red Cell Reference laboratory.
This test was initially made available for pregnant women in Queensland from February 2025 and is now available nationally.
There is no change to the Non-Invasive Prenatal Analysis (NIPA) for clinically significant fetal blood group antigens provided by Lifeblood for alloimmunised pregnant patients.
The two tests have different sample requirements, and we ask you refer to the Lifeblood website (details below), which contains the link for an information sheet and request form for further details.
If you have any queries regarding this change, please contact Lifeblood’s Queensland Red Cell Reference Laboratory on 07 3838 9493.
All women with a RhD negative blood group are now eligible for this test to determine the fetal RhD blood group from 15 weeks gestation. Where the fetal RhD blood group is determined to be RhD negative, RhD immunoglobulin (Ig) (also known as anti-D) will no longer be required prophylactically or for sensitising events.
