Urgent update: FluMist nasal spray influenza vaccine for children

NSW Health is funding FluMist, a nasal spray influenza vaccine, only for children aged 2, 3 and 4 years.

It is important that FluMist is used strictly within this age group.

Key points for providers

  • FluMist is funded and approved only for children aged 2 to less than 5 years

  • FluMist must NOT be used for children aged 6 months to less than 2 years

  • Children outside the 2–4 year age range must receive an age‑appropriate injectable influenza vaccine

  • Standard injectable influenza vaccines remain the recommended option for:

    • children aged 6 months to less than 2 years

    • children aged 5 years and older

Incorrect use of FluMist outside the approved age group may result in children not being adequately protected against influenza.

Health professionals are reminded to check the child’s age and vaccine eligibility before vaccination.

For further information, refer to NSW Health immunisation guidance or speak with your GP, practice nurse or local immunisation provider.
