4.1C Our practice has a clinical team member who has primary responsibility for educating the practice team about infection prevention and control.
RACGP Standards for general practice.
Infection prevention and control is a team effort in general practice. Educating the practice team members is the duty of the clinical team member responsible for infection prevention and control. This education should start at induction and must continue during the team member’s employment at the practice. The RACGP provides information in Infection prevention and control guidelines for general practices and other office-based and community-based practices about recording the education of practice team members and evaluating their competency in this area.
Maintaining an infection control policy helps all members of the practice team understand their own and others’ responsibilities relating to infection.
All members of the practice team must:
have easy access to PPE (eg masks, gloves, gowns, protective eye wear)
receive education about the proper use of PPE
have a clear understanding of the purpose of PPE and how to apply, remove and dispose of it appropriately.
Practice team meetings provide an opportunity to discuss any changes to infection control guidelines, local outbreaks and public health alerts. These discussions should be included in the practice minutes.
