Local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people encouraged to get vaccinated
Wirajduri elder Aunty Gail Manderson has joined Riverina Medical and Dental Aboriginal Corporation (RivMed) in a call for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to get their COVID-19 vaccination as part of an ongoing marketing campaign by Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN).
Aunty Gail said it was time for everyone in the community to come forward and get their vaccination.
“It is important that all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make sure they are vaccinated against COVID-19. This is the best way to protect ourselves and our communities from the effects of this terrible virus,” Aunty Gail said.
“COVID-19 could have a devastating impact on us in the bush and the vaccine is the best tool we have to prevent that from happening.”
Local Wagga Wagga GP Dr Rachael Fikkers, who administers the COVID-19 vaccine at RivMed, said the risk of serious complications from COVID-19 is higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“For those people in high risk groups, the vaccine is the best defence against COVID-19 and will ensure that the likehood of hospitalisation due to infection is significantly reduced,” Dr Fikkers said.
“Vaccination is quick and easy and people can contact RivMed directly to make a booking. The vaccine is available to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over the age of 18.”
MPHN’s Acting CEO Julie Redway said people should remain patient and stay informed as the COVID-19 vaccination rollout continues to gain momentum.
“We hope this campaign will encourage all people across the Murrumbidgee to check their eligibility regularly and speak with their local GP for advice so they can access the vaccine as soon as they are eligible to do so,” Ms Redway said.
“We all share the responsibility of protecting ourselves, our families and the wider community.”
