At risk children aged six months to under five years now eligible for COVID-19 vaccination
From 5 September 2022, parents and guardians are recommended to vaccinate their children aged six months to under five years who are in at-risk population groups against COVID-19.
Associate Professor Ayman Shenouda from Glenrock Country Practice said vaccination against COVID-19 is necessary to reduce the risk of severe disease, hospitalisation and death in this age cohort.
“Children eligible to receive Spikevax (Moderna) in the at-risk population group include those who are severely immunocompromised, have a disability, or have complex and/or multiple health conditions,” Associate Professor Shenouda said.
“Children in this age bracket who are not in at-risk population groups have not been recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) to receive a COVID-19 vaccination at this time.
“Spikevax (Moderna) vaccine will be administered in two doses, except for children with severe immunocompromise who will require three primary doses. The recommended interval between each dose is eight weeks.”
Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) Senior Manager Primary Care Engagement Andrew Heap said the COVID-19 vaccination is safe, effective, and essential to keep young children protected.
“Due to the small group recommended, the COVID-19 vaccine for children will be available at selected general practices around the Murrumbidgee. Participating general practices can be found on the Vaccine Clinic Finder website,” Mr Heap said.
“I encourage parents and guardians to book a COVID-19 vaccination appointment today, and to contact your GP if you have any questions or concerns.”
