Changes to MPHN Leadership

The firsthealth Board has announced today that Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network’s (MPHN) CEO Melissa Neal has made the extremely difficult decision to step down from her position to better balance the needs of her young family.

Ms Neal, who commenced with MPHN in 2015 and was appointed CEO in 2017, will remain with MPHN in the role of Executive Strategy and Innovation to support the organisation’s strategic focus on innovation and business development.

“The decision to step down after almost seven rewarding years as CEO has been a challenging one. However, it comes with the anticipation of achieving a better balance between the needs of my young family and my ongoing commitment to contribute to the communities we serve,” Ms Neal said.

“I feel incredibly privileged to have led this organisation through various challenges and despite the adversities, our efforts have resulted in significant achievements and improvements in the health and wellbeing of people living across the Murrumbidgee.

“As I take this step, I am confident MPHN will continue to thrive and achieve remarkable success. I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Board, the senior leadership team, all of MPHN’s employees, and our stakeholders for all their support, enthusiasm and dedication to improving health outcomes for the communities in which we serve.”

Firsthealth Board Chair, Dr Jodi Culbert thanked Ms Neal for her contribution to the organisation in her role as CEO, and is pleased Ms Neal will remain with the organisation.

“During her tenure, Ms Neal has diligently led the organisation through significant periods of growth, with a strong commitment to our vision of well people, resilient communities while navigating national policy and its local implementation,” Dr Culbert said.

“Melissa’s leadership during natural disasters including a COVID-19 pandemic has ensured employees have been well supported and communities across our region have been able to access services and supports when they most need them.

“The Board is pleased Melissa’s strong advocacy for and commitment to regional and rural health will continue to contribute to MPHN in her new role.”

The Board has appointed Narelle Mills as Interim CEO while an external recruitment process is undertaken. She will commence her role on Monday 5 February 2024.

“Ms Mills has worked in primary healthcare for more than 20 years and has been with MPHN for a significant period in senior leadership roles. She is well positioned to lead the organisation and continue the momentum achieved under our current Strategic Plan,” Dr Culbert said.

“To ensure a seamless transition of leadership, Ms Mills will commence in early February as Interim CEO and commence a four week handover period.

“The Board look forward to working with Narelle as Interim CEO, the Executive and senior leadership team to continue to progress our strategic priorities and vision.”
