Tackling food insecurity: Young pop-up to deliver vital support

People facing food insecurity have the chance to access essential supplies at an upcoming Foodbank pop-up event in Young. Scheduled for Thursday 12 December, from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm, the event will be held at Young Railway Station, Lovell Street, Young. Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable bags.

Foodbank NSW & ACT Chief Operating Officer Samantha Prescott said the event will provide essential, fresh, and nutritious produce for those experiencing food insecurity.

‘We’ll be bringing up to 7 tonnes of fresh produce to the pop up, which will ensure hundreds of families have access to enough fresh food for an entire week,’ Ms Prescott said.

‘It’s a particularly timely event, given the anticipated increase in calls for assistance to local support services as the cost of living continues to rise.

‘If you’re concerned about having access to fresh food, please come along; we’ll have a team of friendly volunteers ready to help you select what you’d like.

‘We’d like to thank Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network for partnering with us to organise the pop up, and Hilltops Council for all their help in bringing this event to fruition; it’s been a combined effort.’

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN), in collaboration with local primary healthcare providers, will also be onsite at the Young event, offering free health checks and vaccinations.

MPHN’s Clinical Programs and Emergency Response Manager Peta Anderson encouraged people to consider their vaccination status.

‘If it’s been over six months since your last COVID-19 vaccination, now is a great time to get a booster,’ Ms Anderson said.

This event follows the success of previous MPHN-funded Foodbank pop-ups held this year in West Wyalong, Deniliquin, Leeton, Wagga Wagga, Tumut, and Hay.

The Young Foodbank pop-up initiative is proudly funded by the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network and supported by Hilltops Council.
