After hours GP helpline

If you are unable to access your GP after hours or do not have a regular GP, the after hours GP helpline can provide immediate advice on what to do about your health concern and direct you to your nearest open services if you need to see a health professional in person.

The after hours GP helpline connects callers to a registered nurse who assesses their condition over the phone. Based on the symptoms at the time of the call the nurse may offer a call back from a GP to provide further medical advice.

The GP is able to advise people on the most appropriate next step. In the majority of cases, people receive medical advice that enables them to manage their condition at home until they can get an appointment with their regular doctor. It can save unnecessary trips in the middle of the night to a local health service, which can be difficult when you have small children to care for or when your local health service is far away.

The after hours GP helpline is available to anyone who:

  • Has a health concern and requires the advice of a GP

  • Is unsure about what they should do with their health concern

  • Does not know where to access face to face health services after hours

Callers can access the after hours GP helpline through Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

The after hours GP helpline is available:

  • Monday to Friday, from 6.00pm until 7.30am

  • Saturday from midday

  • All day Sunday and public holidays

After hours emergency department

If your health concern is an emergency, go to your nearest emergency department.

In smaller towns, this may be a Multi Purpose Service (MPS), which is a facility that contains a small number of health services generally including an Emergency Department (ED) and NSW Ambulance. In your community, it may be known as the local hospital.

Larger towns and centres have hospitals which contain facilities to treat a range of common primary health concerns.

The Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is the largest hospital in the region, containing state of the art facilities to support a broad range of medical and allied health services.

See MyHospitals to search for your nearest facility and the services it provides.
