Opioid Safety Toolkit

A new, evidence-based resource developed by Monash University and funded by the Australian Government

Managing long-term opioid use just got easier—for both patients and health professionals. The Opioid Safety Toolkit is a free, interactive website designed to support safer opioid use, improve patient understanding, and enhance the effectiveness of opioid reviews.

What’s inside the Toolkit?

ROOM Tool (Routine Opioid Outcome Monitoring)

Patients can now complete the ROOM Tool themselves online. The tool generates a personalised score with easy-to-understand advice, helping patients reflect on their current opioid use and guiding meaningful conversations with their healthcare provider.

Build a Personalised Safety Plan

The Toolkit helps users identify their personal risks, understand the signs of overdose, and know exactly what to do in an emergency.

Learn About Naloxone

Naloxone is a life-saving medicine that reverses opioid overdose. It’s now available free across Australia—simple to use as a nasal spray or injection. The Toolkit explains why naloxone is recommended for anyone using long-term opioids, and how patients can access it like they would a smoke alarm or fire extinguisher: something you hope you never need, but may one day save a life.

These resources are evidence-based, patient-approved, and backed by research. They’re designed to empower people living with chronic pain while also making opioid reviews simpler, safer, and more effective for health professionals.
