Murrumbidgee Health & Knowledge Precinct

MPHN is proud to contribute to the Murrumbidgee Health & Knowledge Precinct, a regional partnership focused on improving the quality, accessibility and coordination of health care across our communities. The Precinct brings together partners from health, education, industry and government to design practical, innovative solutions that respond to the unique needs of the Murrumbidgee. Its shared goal is to build a stronger, more connected health system that delivers better outcomes for local people.

For MPHN, the Precinct aligns strongly with our role in strengthening primary health care, improving integration across the system, and supporting better access to services closer to home. The Precinct’s work is guided by three key focus areas: research and innovation, education and workforce, and one system integration. Together, these priorities help create a more sustainable regional health system by supporting new models of care, growing the local workforce, and improving the journey for patients across services and settings.

Supporting a more connected health system

A key area of the Precinct’s work is One System Integration, which focuses on reducing fragmentation and improving coordination across the health system. This includes bringing together hospitals, general practice, community health and other partners to strengthen collaboration and support a more seamless patient journey. In May 2025, the One System Integration Working Group delivered the Murrumbidgee Regional Planning Framework, providing a structured approach for cross-sector organisations to coordinate local health program and service planning across the region.

MPHN’s involvement in this work reflects our broader commitment to integrated care and better regional planning. By contributing a primary care perspective, local health intelligence and strong connections with general practice and community-based services, MPHN helps ensure the Precinct’s work is grounded in the realities of local communities and supports practical improvement across the whole system. This kind of collaboration is especially important in a regional setting, where strong partnerships can help improve access, strengthen care pathways and make better use of local capability. This is an inference based on MPHN’s stated role in regional primary care, research collaboration, and the Precinct’s integration goals.

Growing local workforce and opportunity

The Precinct is also helping build a stronger future workforce for the Murrumbidgee. Through its Education and Workforce focus, partners are working to create clearer training and employment pathways for local people, while helping attract, develop and retain skilled health professionals in the region. This includes partnerships with schools, vocational providers and universities to strengthen rural education and workforce planning.

This is closely aligned with MPHN’s interest in sustainable workforce development across primary care. A stronger regional workforce supports not only hospitals, but also general practice, allied health and community-based services, helping communities access the care they need closer to home.

Backing research and innovation in the region

Research and innovation are another important part of the Precinct’s vision. The Precinct aims to identify new opportunities, strengthen local research capability and explore innovative models of care that can improve access and outcomes for regional communities. Its ambition includes growing a local “Centre of Excellence” that showcases ideas, partnerships and solutions developed in and for the Murrumbidgee.

MPHN sees research as a key part of delivering quality, innovative and effective primary health care, and our own Research Strategy highlights links with local research initiatives, including the Murrumbidgee Health & Knowledge Precinct. By working alongside research, health and education partners, MPHN can help support evidence-informed planning and contribute to locally driven research that improves health outcomes across the region.

A shared investment in regional health

The Murrumbidgee Health & Knowledge Precinct covers a region of more than 125,000 square kilometres and more than 250,000 people, with its core centred around Wagga Wagga’s major health and education assets. It includes more than 25 partner organisations and is designed as a platform for long-term collaboration across public, private, community, education and government sectors.

For MPHN, being part of the Precinct is about contributing to a bigger regional vision, one where services are more connected, workforce pathways are stronger, and innovation is shaped by local need. Through this partnership, MPHN is helping support a healthier future for the Murrumbidgee by working alongside others to strengthen the systems, services and opportunities that underpin good health.
