Making health care decisions for others

This resource from End of Life Law for Clinicians is a practical guide for family members, carers and other substitute decision-makers who may need to make health care decisions for someone who no longer has decision-making capacity.

It explains when substitute decision-making may be needed, how to support a person to make their own decisions where possible, who can legally make decisions on someone else’s behalf, and how to make choices that reflect the person’s own values, wishes and preferences.

The guide also includes helpful examples, key terms and links to further support services.
