Upcoming changes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce terminology
From 1 November 2025, the terminology used for Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health worker and practitioner services will be updated.
A new term, ‘Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander primary health care professionals’, will distinguish health workers and practitioners from allied health professionals.
This update will:
Strengthen the identity of these professions
Ensure appropriate recognition for providing holistic primary health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
Important: This change will not affect MBS patient benefits or how services are delivered.
