Health Pathways update: complex neurodevelopmental disorders

The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has released a new fact sheet outlining the diagnosis and treatment of complex neurodevelopmental conditions (December 2025).

Medicare provides access to allied health sessions to support assessment and management of complex neurodevelopmental disorders for children and young adults under 25 years of age.

Eligible conditions include intellectual disability, autism, global developmental delay and clinically significant impairments across two or more developmental domains.

Key Medicare provisions include:

  • Up to 8 allied health assessment sessions per lifetime.
Additional referrals to other allied health practitioners can be arranged with agreement from the referring doctor.

  • Up to 20 allied health treatment sessions per lifetime (up to 10 per referral).

  • Medicare benefits for case conferences, with no session limits.

This information has been incorporated into HealthPathways to support streamlined GP referral pathways.
