DREAM clinic supports complex diabetes care in Lake Cargelligo

The Diabetes Regional Education Access and Management (DREAM) team travelled from St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney to Lake Cargelligo Family Clinic in early July to deliver their 20th clinic in the Murrumbidgee region.

Endocrinologist Dr Alexander Viardot and Credentialled Diabetes Educator Gael Holters teamed up with local GPs Dr Bardawil and Dr Campbell to consult with 12 patients living with complex diabetes over a two-day period.

The clinic was warmly received by patients, many of whom face challenges travelling long distances to access specialist diabetes care. Patients expressed their appreciation for having the service delivered closer to home, making it easier to receive the clinical support they need.

Dr Bardawil and Dr Campbell also welcomed the opportunity for their patients to receive specialist diabetes care locally. The clinic provided valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing, helping local clinicians further strengthen support for people living with diabetes.

Two final-year University of Sydney medical students completing placements at the clinic were able to observe appointments, with patient consent. The experience provided a unique opportunity to gain practical insights into chronic disease management and collaborative, team-based care in a rural setting.
