Accreditation practice pointer: performance discussions

3.2B  Our practice has performance discussions with each team member.

RACGP Standards for general practice

General practice must encourage each team member to perform top of scope. This can be achieved by holding performance discussions at regular intervals, preferably every six months.

Performance discussions are meant to be collaborative, not disciplinary. Regular performance discussions provide both the employer and the employee the opportunity to raise any issues before they escalate. Likewise, there is also the opportunity to commend sound performance. Ultimately, general practice can provide quality healthcare when each team member is performing effectively.

Practices might also support performance discussions by implementing a formalised performance monitoring process that establishes development goals for each member of the practice team.

Managers also need to document all performance discussions.
