BidgeeCon connects primary care workforce in Wagga Wagga

Primary healthcare professionals from across the Murrumbidgee region came together in Wagga Wagga for the inaugural BidgeeCon, held over two days on 19–20 June.

The conference brought together GPs, nurses, allied health professionals, Aboriginal health workers and practice staff for a program of keynote presentations, hands-on workshops and networking.

MPHN CEO Narelle Mills said the event was designed to support local clinicians in a changing environment.

“We created this event in response to the pace of change across the healthcare system, and the growing complexity of delivering care in rural and regional communities,” Ms Mills said.

The program featured keynote speakers including Associate Professor Michael Clements, Associate Professor John Stevens, Professor Mark Cormack and primary care consultant Mario Gupta. Sessions focused on topics such as scope of practice, multidisciplinary care and shared medical appointments, alongside practical workshops in areas like CPR, wound care and emergency response.

Closing the conference, MPHN Board Chair Associate Professor Alam Yoosuff said the conference showcased the capability across the sector.

“It’s incredibly clear to me that we have such a wealth of skills and experience across our workforce,” Associate Professor Yoosuff said. “It’s something we can be proud of, and something we’ll continue to build on.”

He also acknowledged the ongoing pressures facing primary healthcare, including workforce shortages and increasing demand, while recognising the commitment of local providers to their communities.

BidgeeCon was supported by RACGP, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Pfizer, with organisers noting strong engagement across both days and the value of bringing the region’s primary care workforce together.
