Bowel Cancer Screening
Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in Australia and a leading cause of cancer-related death. The good news? Over 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated if detected early.
National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (NBCSP)
The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program invites eligible Australians aged 50 to 74 to complete a free at-home faecal occult blood test (FOBT) every two years. The test aims to detect bowel cancer in its early stages, when treatment is most effective.
Individuals aged 45 to 49 can now also request their first test kit by:
Speaking with their GP
Completing an online webform
Calling 1800 627 701
Eligible individuals aged 45 to 74 can also ask their GP about receiving a test kit directly.
About the Test
The FOBT is a simple, non-invasive test completed at home. It includes clear instructions and comes with a prepaid envelope to return the sample to the laboratory. Results are sent to both the individual and their nominated GP.
In the event of a positive test result, the individual is encouraged to consult their doctor immediately for further investigation, often including colonoscopy referral.
Additional Options
Test kits can also be purchased from most pharmacies or ordered online via the Bowel Cancer Australia website.
