Breast Cancer Screening
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian women, and early detection remains key to improving survival outcomes.
Screening Recommendations
Current guidelines recommend that women aged 50 to 74 years have a screening mammogram every two years. Women aged 40 to 49 and those over 75 are also eligible to attend, but participation is encouraged most strongly for those in the 50–74 target age group.
BreastScreen NSW
BreastScreen NSW offers free mammograms at both permanent and mobile clinics across the state. No referral is required, however GPs play a crucial role by:
Encouraging eligible patients to participate
Providing information about the benefits of early detection
Supporting follow-up and continuity of care
Reviewing mammographic breast density reports
BreastScreen NSW now provides breast density information to clients and their nominated GPs, offering an additional layer of clinical insight.
