Electronic Prescription

An Electronic Prescription (EP) is a digital version of a paper prescription. It offers a safe and convenient alternative to paper prescriptions. Consumers can choose to receive an electronic prescription from their healthcare provider when they next need a prescription, or they can request that it be sent to their Active Script List (ASL). Most pharmacies are set up to dispense medicines using electronic prescriptions.

What is an Active Script List (ASL)?

An Active Script List (ASL) is a digital compilation of your electronic prescriptions and computer-generated paper prescriptions. It is a convenient option for those who take multiple medications.

Once registered, consumers no longer need to keep track of each electronic prescription token. Having an ASL means the consumers can enter a participating pharmacy, give consent for the staff to access their list, and have that pharmacy dispense their medicines.

The consumers can ask their pharmacy about registering for an Active Script List.

Electronic Prescriptions (EP) involve the secure exchange of prescription information between prescribing and dispensing systems. To send and receive electronic prescriptions securely, a Prescription Delivery Service (PDS), such as eRx,  must be enabled. Electronic prescriptions are not mandatory; consumers have the choice to receive their prescription either as an electronic script (including via an Active Script List) or as a traditional paper prescription, depending on their preference, from their prescriber.
