Fight the bite: prepare for mosquito season

Mosquito season begins around September in Australia, with mosquito activity in NSW typically peaking between November and April.

Mosquito-borne illnesses remain a significant public health concern. The Murrumbidgee region is considered a high-risk local government area for Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and people aged two months and older living in the region are eligible for a free JEV vaccine.

JEV vaccine supply

There is currently ample supply of Imojev, the live attenuated Japanese encephalitis vaccine, available to order through the State Vaccine Centre.

JEV immunisation training

Additional training is required for pharmacist immunisers wishing to provide JEV vaccines.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Australia offers a Japanese encephalitis training module, which also provides up to two CPD credits.
