Consultation report explores future of general practice accreditation

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released a public consultation report on potential changes to general practice accreditation under the National General Practice Accreditation (NGPA) Scheme.

The consultation attracted strong engagement from across the sector, with 1,011 responses informing future planning.

Overall, there was broad agreement that the accreditation process could be improved, although views differed on how to achieve this.

Two preferred approaches emerged:

  • Option one: an extended accreditation cycle with at least one mid-point review

  • Option two: assessments conducted at short notice

Option one was the clear preference, with most respondents supporting a longer cycle combined with a mid-point review to support ongoing compliance.

The Commission will continue consulting with stakeholders to determine next steps. Current accreditation arrangements remain in place.
