What advanced or extended skills training is available in the Murrumbidgee?

For GP registrars planning their training pathway, one of the most common questions is: what advanced or extended skills training can I actually do in this region?

With different terminology used across GP Training Colleges, and information often spread across multiple websites, it can be difficult to get a clear picture of what training is available locally.

Let’s break it down

Both GP Training Colleges offer additional skills training, but they use different names. RACGP refers to extended skills training and additional rural skills training (ARST), while ACRRM refers to advanced specialised training (AST). While the language differs, the clinical skills themselves are largely the same.

There is also the Australian Government’s Advanced Skills Training Posts Program, which supports additional training posts in specific locations to help address identified workforce gaps. This program does not introduce new skills, but instead expands where existing skills can be trained.

Skills in the Murrumbidgee

In the Murrumbidgee region, GP registrars can currently access advanced or extended skills training in:

  • Anaesthesia

  • Child health and paediatrics

  • Emergency medicine

  • Mental health

  • Obstetrics and gynaecology

  • Palliative care

Registrars are encouraged to explore which skills align with their career goals and to seek local advice early when planning placements. MPHN can provide information about training locations within the region, supervision arrangements, and emerging opportunities, as well as discuss interest in skills not currently available.

“Registrars often tell us it’s hard to know what training is available in a specific region. Having clear, local guidance helps registrars plan with confidence and supports communities to build the workforce they need,” she said.

GP registrars at any stage of training are encouraged to get in touch with MPHN’s Workforce Planning and Prioritisation Manager, Jeanette Lautier, to discuss advanced and extended skills training options in the Murrumbidgee.
