Wagga Wagga residents reminded of 1800MEDICARE and urgent care options during winter illness surge

Wagga Wagga residents with an urgent but non-life-threatening illness or injury are being encouraged to call 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422), where a same-day appointment may be available. 

The reminder comes as winter illnesses continue to increase demand on health services across NSW. 

1800MEDICARE is a free 24/7 service staffed by registered nurses who assess symptoms and connect callers with the most appropriate care. Depending on a person's needs, this may include advice to see their regular GP, a referral to a local health service, a phone or video consultation with a clinician, self-care advice, or access to a same-day urgent care appointment.  

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network CEO Narelle Mills said many people were unaware they had options other than attending the emergency department if their own GP was unavailable.  

“If you're unwell or injured and it's not an emergency and you’re unable to see your GP, calling 1800MEDICARE is a quick way to speak directly with a registered nurse,” Ms Mills said. 

“The registered nurse who takes your call will assess your symptoms and connect you with the most suitable care, which may include a same-day GP urgent care appointment here in Wagga.” 

The Wagga Wagga Urgent Care Service is delivered through participating general practices across the city and provides bulk-billed treatment for urgent conditions that do not require emergency department care. 

People who are assessed by 1800MEDICARE as suitable for GP urgent care should have access to a face-to-face appointment through the Wagga Wagga Urgent Care Service providing appointments are still available on the day. 

Ms Mills said understanding the available options can help people access treatment sooner and assist in keeping local emergency departments focused on patients with urgent life-threatening conditions.
