You may not think you are a ‘carer’ because you are looking after someone you love. But recognising you are a carer can give you access to the right support.

Carers are an integral part of Australia’s health system and are the foundation of our aged, disability, palliative and community care systems.

A carer is anyone who gives ongoing unpaid support to someone who needs it, a carer may young, be in the workforce, or maybe caring for extended family. This might be because of:

  • disability

  • chronic or life-limiting illness

  • mental illness

  • addiction

  • dementia or

  • frail age.
