Antenatal Shared Care Program
The Murrumbidgee Region GP Antenatal Shared Care Program aims to provide a high standard of pregnancy care for women giving birth in the Murrumbidgee Region. This program has developed as a result of collaboration between the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network, Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and local GP Obstetricians. The Antenatal Shared Care Program aims to:
Provide choice, continuity of care and greater accessibility for women by seeing their general practitioner during pregnancy
Enable general practitioners to provide a high standard of antenatal care to women who are suitable for antenatal shared care
Provide general practitioners with recommended 'best practice' standard for antenatal care
Provide clear referral pathways when low risk pregnancy deviate from normal

The Antenatal (Pregnancy) Shared Care brochure provides:
Contact details for services to support women during pregnancy
an outline of recommended antenatal care, and
a list of GPs in the Murrumbidgee Region who have attended antenatal shared care training with the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network
For Health Professionals
GPs who have patients that may deliver at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and the Murrumbidgee region can participate in an Antenatal Shared Care Orientation and Update workshop which is held annually by the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network.
These workshops are designed to:
Provide familiarity with the Murrumbidgee Region Antenatal Shared Care Checklist and Options for Antenatal Shared Care brochure
Improve referral and communication processes between the GPs and the Maternity services at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital
Inform GPs about public and private services available in the Murrumbidgee Region for maternity care
Provide GPs with the requirements for first trimester screening
Improve understanding of the diagnosis and management of common pregnancy complications such as hypertension and gestational diabetes

The Antenatal Shared Care Program was established in early 2011, a collaborative effort between the Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network and the Wagga Wagga Base Obstetricians and the Pregnancy Care & Education Centre
43 GPs have attended 6 hours of training and are now listed as Antenatal Shared Care GPs on the Options for Antenatal Shared Care brochure
Antenatal Shared Care Brochure and Antenatal Shared Care Checklist have been developed and distributed as part of the program. The program supports GP awareness of contemporary evidence-based guidelines produced by the Government of Australia Department of Health since 2012 - http://www.health.gov.au/antenatal
