What is Digital Health?
Digital Health is the convergence of the digital and genomic revolutions with health, healthcare, living and society. Digital health is empowering people to better track, manage and improve their own and their families’ health, live better, more productive lives, and improve society. It’s also helping to reduce inefficiencies in healthcare delivery, improve access, reduce costs, increase quality, and make medicine more personalised and precise.
My Health Record
My Health Record commenced on 1 July 2012. Like many similar initiatives around the world, it is a secure, online summary of an individual’s health information. It can be viewed by treating healthcare providers, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists across Australia. MyHealth Record is a secure, electronic record of a patient's medical history, stored and shared in a network of connected systems. The Health Record will bring key health information from a number of different systems together and present it in a single view. Comprehensive information for providers is available on the My Health Record website at or by calling the provider helpline on 1800 723 471.
Information you can access through My Health Record includes:
Shared Health Summary: A summary, authored by the treating doctor, of an individual’s health status including adverse reactions, medicines, medical history and immunisations
Hospital Discharge Summaries: A record of an individual’s hospital stay and any follow up treatment required
Diagnostic reports: Such as pathology and imaging results
Prescriptions and dispense information: Such as dosages and frequency
Event Summaries: Clinical summaries of health events entered by the healthcare provider who was involved in the patient’s care to inform other treating healthcare providers
Specialist letters: Referral letters and reports from one treating healthcare provider to another

eHealth Practice Incentive Program Incentive (ePIP)
The PIP delivers financial incentive with the aim of recognising general practices that provide comprehensive, quality care, who are either accredited or working towards accreditation with the RACGP standards for general practice. The PIP eHealth Incentive encourages practices to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in eHealth. From May 2016, the ePIP will be renamed the PIP Digital Health Incentive. The current ePIP has five requirements for practices to become eligible and they are:

Data records and clinical coding
Electronic transfers of prescriptions

As of 1 May 2016, there will be an additional component of the fifth requirement. This requires practices to upload Shared Health Summaries for 0.5% of their Standardised Whole Patient Equivalent figure (SWPE) count to be eligible to receive the PIP Digital Health Incentive each quarter. This equates to about five Shared Health Summaries per full-time equivalent GP per quarter (i.e for a practice with five full-time equivalent GPs, it would equate to 25 Shared Health Summary uploads per quarter).

Electronic Transfer of Prescriptions (eTP)
Electronic transfer of prescriptions is the secure exchange of prescription information between prescribing and dispensing systems. eTP is available now, free of charge, and will not take any additional time to do. To set up eTP in your practice you'll need to contact your software provider and/eRx or MediSecure depending on which system you have.
National Health Service Directory (NHSD)
The NHSD is a joint initiative of all Australian Governments delivered by Healthdirect Australia, to provide a comprehensive and consolidated directory of health service and provider information. For consumers, the NHSD currently provides essential service information such as location, opening hours and contact details. The NHSD also supports health professionals by facilitating the coordination of ongoing care for patients and communication between health professionals through secure messaging and electronic referrals. Secure Message Delivery
Secure messaging is the secure electronic transfer of information between health professionals across the healthcare sector, including general practitioners, allied health professionals, hospitals and specialists etc. Secure messaging allows you to exchange reports, discharge summaries and other documents between other health professionals. The benefits include:
Reducing the time waiting for documents to be delivered
Receiving the doucments electronically into your software, removing the need for scanning
No more illegible and faxed documents
Cost saving on staff time, stationery and postage

Telehealth is the term used for a video consultation between a patient (who may be with their GP, or the GPs representative) and a specialist. Telehealth benefits rural and remote patients, patients who are not easily transported or those living in aged care faciltiies, who would otherwise need to travel long distances for specialist advice. Medicare item numbers are available to support a number of services to be delivered by telehealth and many health providers are increasing their use of telehealth.
