Pride month: improving healthcare access for LGBTQIA+ patients
June marks Pride Month, a chance to celebrate diversity and consider how we can continue to support inclusive healthcare for LGBTQIA+ patients.
Despite progress, members of the rainbow community still face barriers to care, including discrimination, lack of inclusive services, and concerns about confidentiality.
How GPs can help:
Understand unique needs: Take time to learn about the specific health needs and experiences of LGBTQIA+ patients to support better outcomes.
Use inclusive language: Simple changes in language can create a more welcoming, respectful environment.
Train your team: Encourage staff training to build cultural competence and ensure LGBTQIA+ patients feel safe and supported.
Review your policies: Advocate for and implement practice policies that reduce barriers and promote access for all.
Engage with community organisations: Collaborating with LGBTQIA+ health groups helps strengthen trust and improve care beyond Pride Month.
