Accreditation practice pointer: recalling patients with clinically significant results

GP2.2B Our practice recalls patients who have clinically significant results.

RACGP Standards for general practice.

General practice must have a process for recalling patients who receive clinically significant results.

Such results can determine the choices made by the patient and all clinicians involved in the patient’s care.

Significant results must be communicated quickly to ensure the patient has the opportunity to receive quality care.

The practice must also document in the patient’s health record each attempt to contact and recall patients about clinically significant results.

Practices can also support patient recalls by:

  • having a practice team member who is responsible for the recall process

  • having a recall policy for practice team members to follow

  • maintaining templates in a clinical software program to trigger recalls

  • including recall responsibilities in relevant position descriptions

  • having recalls sent through the clinical information system.
