Second COVID-19 Pfizer vaccination for 5-11 year olds now due

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) is reminding parents and guardians, second COVID-19 vaccination doses for children aged 5-11 years old are due eight weeks after their primary dose.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has made recommendations for the use of Pfizer (Comirnaty) paediatric vaccine in children aged 5 to 11 years and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine in children aged 6 to 11 years.

Deniliquin Respiratory Clinic Practice Manager Sarah Campbell emphasises the significant importance of completing the double vaccination course of the same vaccine against COVID-19 for our young population in the region.

“Vaccination hesitancy amongst this age group is very concerning as the virus easily spreads in school and day-care settings,” Ms Campbell said.

“Even though children may only present mild symptoms, they can spread the virus to vulnerable family members such as grandparents.

“It is critical that parents and guardians prioritise their children’s health and book their two COVID-19 vaccination appointments today.”

ATAGI recommends the eight week interval between the two COVID-19 vaccine doses for this particular age group.

MPHN Senior Manager Primary Care Engagement Andrew Heap said children who received their first COVID-19 vaccination on the 10 January 2022 will be able to receive their second dose on 7 March 2022.

“It is important the interval period between the COVID-19 vaccine doses is eight weeks as it provides stronger protection to the virus,” Mr Heap said.

“However, ATAGI indicates the interval doses can be shortened to a minimum of three weeks in special circumstances, such as significant immunosuppression, outbreaks in the community or international travel.”

Children who have had COVID-19 should still complete their vaccination schedule when they have recovered from the virus and are eligible for the second dose.

At this stage, a booster dose is not recommended for this age group as the primary vaccination course generates a strong immune response.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to book their child’s first and/or secondary COVID-19 vaccination without delay.
