Marking 30 years of primary healthcare
Last week, on the 17 May 2024, firsthealth Limited operating as Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) marked a significant milestone - 30 years of commitment to primary healthcare.
The celebration, held in Wagga Wagga, brought together past employees, directors, stakeholders, and community members to reflect on three decades of service.
MPHN’s Acting CEO Narelle Mills said it was a privilege to welcome so many important members of the organisation’s history to the celebration.
‘The organisation and, importantly, the people who have worked or still work here, along with our many partners, are genuinely passionate about making a difference, and that’s what keeps me turning up every day,’ Ms Mills said.
Firsthealth Board Chair Dr Jodi Culbert paid tribute to Nancye Piercy, the longest-standing CEO, whose determination was instrumental in MPHN’s success.
‘For those of you who were privileged to be involved with the organisation during Nancye’s tenure, you will know how much grit and determination she had to keep our organisation alive before we became a Primary Health Network,’ Dr Culbert said.
‘In fact, organisation legend has it that Nancye is credited with ensuing MPHN became the nation’s 31st PHN, when only 30 were originally planned.
‘Since our humble beginnings in the mid-1990s supporting general practices in Wagga Wagga and surrounds with a handful of staff, we have grown to now support primary healthcare providers and community across the entire Murrumbidgee region.’
The event was also a reflection on the challenges that persist, with Dr Culbert noting workforce shortages, a concern since the organisation's inception, continue to be a pressing issue. However, she expressed confidence in the organisation's ability to innovate and collaborate to address these challenges effectively.
The evening also featured a panel discussion, where past and present employees, directors, and stakeholders shared their experiences and insights. Peter Keith, a founding GP and former Board Director, reminisced about the early days of the organisation, highlighting the camaraderie and dedication that fuelled its growth.
Nancye Piercey, who served as CEO for 18 years, reflected on the organisation's evolution and the risks taken to ensure its survival. MPHN’s Senior Manager Priority Populations Anita McRae provided a contemporary perspective, emphasising the organisation’s ongoing commitment to serving diverse communities and addressing emerging health issues.
In celebrating 30 years of primary healthcare, firsthealth not only honoured their past achievements but also reaffirmed their commitment to shaping the future of healthcare in the region. With a legacy built on passion, dedication, and innovation, MPHN looks forward to continuing its journey towards healthier communities and wellbeing for all.
