Looking after your mental health this holiday period
As 2021 draws to a close Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) is encouraging people across the region to make taking care of your mental health a priority. Nearly half of all Australians will experience a mental health issue during their lifetime, and those that don’t will most likely know someone that does.
MPHN CEO Melissa Neal said although the holiday period can bring additional challenges to some people help is available.
“Tough times can happen to anyone, but nobody should feel alone and it’s always okay to ask for help at any time” Ms Neal said.
“2021 has been another tough year. We are encouraging anyone who is struggling, to talk to family and friends and let them know how you’re feeling. Check in with family and friends and ask if they are okay too.”
MPHN Senior Manager Mental Health Drug and Alcohol Anita McRae said being able to identify when a loved one or even a work colleague might be distressed or experiencing mental health issues and how to respond is important.
“While mental health issues can be very isolating, connecting with people and having conversations about mental health can minimise stigma and encourage people to seek help when they need it,” Ms Neal said.
“We encourage talking to you GP to seek help in the first instance but supports and resources are available in a variety of forms at all times.
“A key resource is MapMyRecovery, a platform which allows people to find services and supports available, and it’s also useful in assisting you trying to help someone in need – their friends, family and carers to connect with suitable local supports,” Ms McRae said.
