Women’s Health Week 2023: putting women's wellbeing first

Murrumbidgee Primary Health Network (MPHN) is celebrating Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week 2023, running from 4 – 8 September 2023.

This year's theme is ‘Grow your knowledge’ and focuses on empowering women, girls, and gender-diverse people to make well-informed decisions about their health.

MPHN CEO Melissa Neal said she was encouraging women to take control of their health journey.

“Your health is your most precious asset,” Ms Neal said.

“Women, girls, and gender-diverse people face unique health challenges throughout their lives, and it’s critical we take the time to look after our own health.

“By actively seeking health information, you’re better equipped to navigate medical choices, ask relevant questions when you’re with healthcare professionals, and advocate for personalised care that addresses your specific needs.

“Start by booking regular health check-ups and screenings – it’s an easy way to detect potential health issues early when they’re often more treatable. Our region’s primary care providers are well placed to help address any health concerns and provide you with preventative care.”

MPHN is particularly encouraging women to book a cervical screening test, with Murrumbidgee screening rates below the state and national average. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers.

Prioritising health can also positively impact mental wellbeing. Engaging in self-care routines, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and seeking support when needed contribute to overall emotional wellness. Women who actively manage their health are more likely to enjoy an improved quality of life as they age.

“Taking charge of your own health is an investment in your overall wellbeing and a positive influence on your family and the wider community,” Ms Neal said.

“If women are physically, mentally, and socially healthy, we’re setting ourselves up to lead happy and fulfilling lives.”
