Cultural Awareness Training - General Practice program

Murrumbidgee PHN engaged Coolamon Advisors to facilitate the Cultural Awareness Training to our primary care sector. GPs, practice managers, practice nurses and practice staff working within the Murrumbidgee region are invited to attend this training to enhance skills in working effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

Content

  • Definition of cultural safety determined by how safe Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients/clients feel when they use the service.

  • Historical, cultural, socioeconomic factors underpinning health and wellbeing, cross cultural communication and cultural safety.

  • Opportunity for participants to become aware of their own attitudes, perceptions and assumptions in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

  • Identification of barriers to cultural safety and examples of culturally safe processes and behaviours.

  • Strategies for developing an ongoing relationship with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community or representative groups.

  • National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health initiatives, including identification, the Close the Gap initiative, the PIP IHI and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) co-payment measure.

  • Strategies for implementing a culturally safe health service, including access (physical, financial, environmental, cultural), interpersonal relationships, communication and culturally appropriate procedures for assessment, referral, treatment and continued care.

Delivery

Each session will be delivered in three parts: 

  • Completion of Pre-Learning Workbook (1 hour)*

  • Attendance at a Zoom webinar commencing at 6:00pm delivered by Coolamon Advisors (1.5 hours)

  • Completion of an action plan and evaluation post-webinar (30 mins)

*The workbook must be completed before the webinar as the information gained will inform discussion and assist you to maximise your learning

Learning Outcomes

  1. Assess Health issues of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of the Murrumbidgee region. (Evaluate)

  2. Describe Journey of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander patient attending a general practice and how attitudes and values can influence perceptions, assumptions, and behaviours in a clinical setting. (Explain)

  3. Identify the   Five steps towards excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and the importance of the 715 Check

  4. Identify key issues facing general practice in the provision of culturally safe health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and generate ways of solving these issues. (List and Create)

 Presenters

A Wiradjuri woman from Junee, Katrina Fanning AO PSM is the Director of Coolamon Advisors, an Indigenous majority owned and managed consultancy company, dedicated to providing meaningful contributions to Indigenous development, participation, and outcome equity.

A women’s rugby league pioneer, Katrina played the inaugural Jillaroos test in 1995, retiring as the most capped female player after 26 appearances for Australia.

Most recently her work has included being an integral part of the Closing the Gap National Partnership Agreement negotiations and facilitation of the Aboriginal-led Review on the progress of implementation.

Katrina’s previous achievements include being inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2024, being awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia in the 2023 Australia Day Honours, winner of the ACT Australian of the Year Award in 2020, a Public Service Medal for outstanding public service in Indigenous Affairs in 2015, ACT Woman of the Year in 2014, and ACT NAIDOC Person of the Year in 2014.
